This first part of our designed religious tour it will be in between three countries, Albania, North Republic of Macedonia and Greece. A very well thought 10 days’ tour around Unesco cities, churches and monasteries to discover the best and old frescoes that these monuments hold.

Day 1: Arrive at Tirana Mother Theresa Airport. Upon your arrival, we will welcome you and drive you to your hotel for check in. Overnight in Tirana

Day 2,Tirana – Elbasan – Ohrid

After breakfast we start our journey with destination the Unesco city of Ohrid as proclaimed the Jerusalem of the Balkans with 365 churches, basically one church for every day of the year. We will stop in Elbasan for a short visit of its walls, history and church. Lunchtime will catch up on us in a very nice spot, the village of Lin. This little cozy village in the peninsula of the Ohrid Lake as well as a great lunch, it will provide for us also a view of the mosaic in the paleo Cristian basilica that holds there. After lunch we continue towards the border to Northern Macedonia and we visit Sveti Naum Monastery on the way.

Day 3,Ohrid

Today we will explore the Unesco city of Ohrid and its old town and churches. There is a boat trip planned for you as well so you can enjoy a view of the city from the emerald clear waters of the lake. We will visit the old town and its characteristic houses and alleys, its churches and castle walls for an eagle eye view of the town. We will start our visit with “St. Sofia” church, built between the 11th and 14th century, which was the seat of the Archbishop. “St. Clement” church, a classic Orthodox Byzantine church, dominating the Old Town, demonstrates the link between Byzantine and Italian Renaissance art. At “Plaoshnik” church, in the 9 the century, St. Clement of Ohrid founded the first University of Europe and educated 3.500 students, St. John at Kaneo church, which is also the symbol of this town which is built on the shore of the Lake at the western end of the Old Town, and provides spectacular panoramic views of the Lake and surrounding mountains, Samuil fortress, etc. Other visits include– Saint Sophia Cathedral, Saint Painteleimon Church, The Holy Virgin of Peribleptos Church, Icon Galery,-and old Bazaar. Our way back it will be by the crystal waters of Lake Ohrid, a short boat trip that will give you another perspective of this unique town.

Day 4,Ohrid – Bitola - Korce

After breakfast we will departure towards the town of Bitola. The stately old architecture of Bitola goes back to more than a century ago when the town was a Centre for international diplomats to the Ottoman administration. We will be a visiting the ruins of the ancient city of Heraclea, a very interesting archeological site holding amazing mosaics. The journey will continue towards the Prespa Lakes and the town of Korca. This town is very particular and it is distinguished from all other Abanian cities for its aristocracy, gastronomy, people and climate. In Korca we will see the first school of Albania, The Mosque of Mirahori (one of the oldest in the country) and the Orthodox Cathedral. Also we will visit two museums of this lovely town, one a great Asian collection and the other a Medieval one. The “Republika” boulevard and the Old Bazaar area provides a contemporary zone for spending few happy moments.

Day 5,Korce – Villages – Korce

Today after breakfast we will explore the area around Korce. The villages that we will visit have some of the oldest churches in the country and their frescoes made by Zeografi brothers. Voskopoja village was one of the most important towns in the Balkans during the beginning of the 18th century.

Day 6,Korce – Meteora

After breakfast we will prepare and set to travel towards Greece, where we will visit the town of Meteora and its monasteries. The first monks of Meteora arrived back in the 14th century establishing an entire monastic community on top giant cliffs. They chose to do this not because it was easy but because it was hard, almost impossible. And they succeeded in this great achievement through their faith. Serene, spiritual, magical, mystical, extraordinary, breathtaking, immense, inspiring, impressive. These are only some of the words people very often use in an effort to describe the Meteora phenomenon. Meteora is a truly inspiring and sensational setting of overwhelming rock formations, but one must also be prepared to expect that this trip is much more than merely visiting an exquisite landscape.

Day 7,Meteora

Today, after breakfast and adequately dressed, we will visit all monasteries of this place. The monasteries of Meteora looks like they are suspended in the air. Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties. These monasteries represent a unique artistic achievement and are one of the most powerful examples of the architectural transformation of a site into a place of retreat, meditation and prayer. From the early Christian times, the Meteora vertical cliffs were regarded as the perfect place to achieve absolute isolation, to discover peace and harmony and, thus, to support man’s eternal struggle for spiritual elevation.

Day 8,Meteora – Gjirokastra

After breakfast we will depart towards Albania and its unique UNESCO city of Gjirokastra, proclaimed “Museum City” and known as ‘’City of Stone’’.The houses here have the form of medieval towers constituting a building ensemble with a characteristic architecture. Gjirokastra it is also the birthplace of the former iron-fisted dictator of Albania, Enver Hoxha. It is a strikingly picturesque town, perched on the side of a mountain above the Drino River and Drino Valley. The tour includes the district museum, housed in the building in which Enver Hoxha was born and the pre-Ottoman citadel, a former political prison and now a weapons museum.

Day 9,Gjirokastra – Ardenica – Berat

After breakfast we will leave behind the City of Stone to continue towards the City of Thousand Windows, the Unesco city of Berat. The Monastry of Ardenica close to Berat, will be our first visit. Built in the thirteenth century on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the Greek goddess of hunting Artemis, The Monastery of Ardenica offers interesting history, frescoes and landscape.

Day 10,Berat – Tirane

After traditional breakfast in Berat, we will start the walking tour of the town to visit the upper castle with its characteristic houses and the museum of the icons. Walking down in the lower part of the town we will visit the medieval centre and some very beautiful examples of byzantine churches and ottoman mosques. Berat is also known as “The town of a Thousand windows” due to the many large buildings that decorate the houses of the old town. The town is still renowned for its historic architecture and particular beauty and is declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Historical Berat consist of three quarters. The quarters of Gorica and Mangalem are situated on the slopes of two hills that are divided by the river Osum. The castle (fortress) quarter stands on the top of the Magalemi hill and is enclosed by a fortification wall that dates back to the IV century BC. The town has several XVI century mosques, very well decorated and a very large numbers of Byzantine orthodox churches. Several of the churches has frescoes by the well-known painter Onufri and his school and from other later famous schools of frescos and icons of the Balkan area. After visiting Berat, we will departure towards Tomori Mountain, to visit Kulmaku tekke. The place where it is held the biggest pilgrimage in Albania for the Bektashi sect, a holy place for Bektashi devotees, but it is attended even by the devotees of other religions. We will then travel towards Tirana, the most important and capital city of Albania.
